Your Death

Green Day, "Wake Me Up When September Ends" (2004)

"Wake Me Up When September Ends" is a 2004 song by American rock band Green Day. Green Day's lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song about his father, who passed away from cancer in September 1982. The song portrays the singer's reaction to his father's death. At the funeral, he cried, ran home and locked himself in his room, and when his mother came to his room, Armstrong said, "Wake me up when September ends." This later became the title of the song.

The lyrics and inspiration for this song are a representation of Aries' 'Your Death' mentality. It deals with the loss of a loved one and the unacceptance of the separation. The intolerance of separation from his father led the singer to express himself through this song. The song is filled with emotional lyrics that communicate the singers' painful memories of loss and put an emphasis on the 20 years he needed to cope with it and accept it.

A hard time accepting the loss is also shown through the delay of publishing the song because the singer was still not emotionally ready to perform it. On the other hand, the dramatic music video of the song portrays a reflection on the American devastation after the 9/11 attacks which coincidently aligns with the lyrics of the song. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and its portrayal of coping with the death of the other in the 21st century has become one of the greatest emotional rock anthems of the century.
