Your Death

The modern cemetery in the city

Cemeteries hold a significant place within our society and offer a place to venerate the dead. This also means that graves are no longer in a church or on a churchyard. Cemeteries, tombs, and graves hold a sign of presence. Cemeteries are places to 'meet' the dead. This is part of the so-called 'Your Death' attitude towards death.

The picture at the top presents a modern cemetery in Manila, the Philippines. The picture, furthermore, was published by the Guardian in 2015. It shows that the death mentalities that are linked to historical periods (by Ariès) are still traceable and relevant in the 21st century. Nevertheless, our rich tradition is now causing problems. Cemeteries are filling up and 'the business of death has become highly lucrative'. This means that in cities the cost of the dying is rising and there is a lack of space all across the world. It is questionable whether we will be able to keep up with traditional burial practices.
