Dr. Piia Varis is in the early stages of doing research into conspiracy theories, the dissemination of knowledge and the formation of online groups. According to her, it impossible to say how much the emergence of the internet has impacted the development of conspiracy theories. However, there are reasons to believe that the internet has helped people to produce new forms of expertise, and that (alternative) knowledge can be shared more easy.
